Two Shelby County victims assistance agencies begin work on new offices in
FSC building
The convenience and security of victims of violence and crime will move to the forefront when the offices of the Shelby County Crime Victims Center and the Mid-South Sexual Assault Resource Center (MSARC) transfer their offices to a building in Midtown.
The two Shelby County agencies will be located on the first floor of the Madison Professional Building at 1750 Madison Avenue - in the same building where the Family Safety Center will occupy the top floor before the end of the year. When all construction and moving is finished, a major step will have been taken by the community to help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes.
"Work on the first floor to update office space begins in early July and is expected to take about three months," said Olliette Murry-Drobot, the FSC's new executive director.
"This is going to make a big difference for people whose lives are thrown into sudden chaos because of crime," she added.
Making life easier for victims is the central reason for the advent of the Family Safety Center itself. Too often, victims of assault or domestic violence face such a complex series of appointments, visits, meetings and court appearances - all in different locations - that many just give up on obtaining the justice they deserve. The location of critical victims assistance agencies in one building is a crucial part of a holistic community response to the problems of family violence.
Because many government and nonprofit agencies will co-locate in the Center on the building's sixth floor, the FSC will provide one location where DV victims and their families can receive the legal and social services they need - services provided by an array of organizations that will work more closely together.
"The FSC concept is simple, actually," Murry-Drobot said. "We will be a one-stop shop where service providers and representatives of the justice system can meet with families in an environment where they will be safe and where they can focus on putting their lives back together."
